"There is something in every one of you that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in yourself.  It is the only true guide you will ever have."--Howard Thurman.

Yesterday I had the gift of a clergy nurturing day at the Shalem Institute for Spirituality.  How good to be apart and to be quiet and to pray in various ways (chant, silence, song, movement, story-writing).

+If you would like to try out different ways to pray, meet Elizabeth today 4-5 in SUB I, the campus ministry office.

+Wed. 2/24 @ 747PM we return to SUB I, room B (upper level) for creative worship and welcome the Rev. Phil Hirsch, Director for Evangelical Mission & Assistant to the Bishop, Metro DC Synod, ELCA.

+Table Talk Free Dinner & a chance to relax Thursday Feb. 25 @ 7-9PM at St. George's United Methodist Church on Ox Rd (across from Giant and just south of Braddock).  Meet Elizabeth at Sandy Creek Circle @ 6:30PM for a ride there.

+Spring Break Mission Day 'Trip':

Hunger and Homelessness are issues in Fairfax County.  Rising Hope Mission United Methodist Church’s mission is “bringing the "power of Christ" and the "support of the church" to the community living in poverty south of Alexandria, VA along the Route 1 Corridor of Fairfax County.”

This 'trip' involves food collection, working with Rising Hope in its mission-in a food pantry, in food delivery, in assisting with preparing and serving lunch.  We’ll also be working with family and individual shelters in that part of the county.  The program will be different each day.  Details are still being finalized.

The dates are Tuesday March 9 through Sunday March 14. There’s a worship opportunity on Sunday.  The ‘trip’ will consist of a morning and a late afternoon pick up with day and evening ‘shifts’ and return to campus.

We hope that you will volunteer for several days or evenings so that you acquire a sense of the low income/homeless culture just across the county.  But one day volunteers are also welcome.  You can work this service opportunity into other plans that you have for break week.

Let Pete (pfontnea@gmu.edu) or Elizabeth (ebaird@gmu.edu) know when you’d like to participate.

+The "Cries of Anguish; Stories of Hope" Web site is a Lenten study for churches, individuals or ecumenical groups.

On the Web site you can:

# Watch the weekly videos. World Council of Churches has found videos that showcase the work people are doing around the world to eliminate some forms of violence against women. Learn about their work through the videos WCC is sharing.

# Lead a Bible study. WCC has created Bible studies for you to talk about the video. For each week of Lent, WCC has selected texts that deal with violence against women.

# Pray for the elimination of violence against women. Each week, along with a video and a Bible study, WCC has created some prayers in the hope that as our collective prayer life grows stronger so will our actions to eliminate this violence.

# Read our Personal Reflections.. WCC members and invited guests to share their reflections on the videos. These are “simply ideas and reflections on this violent issue and our spirituality.”

# Add your own reflections. What do you think? What are you doing in your community? What have your experiences been? WCC wants to know.

The study can be downloaded at women.overcomingviolence.org.

+A request came in to the CMA office:received this email below from Charvis Campbell, our GMU Prince William University Life Assoc. Dean, about a school supply drive for Mayfield Intermediate School that was damaged in the recent snow storm and declared condemned.  He has requested the support of Campus Ministry in participating and encourage our students to donate supplies.

Homeless Bobcats Need Your Help

Mayfield Intermediate School in the City of Manassas, home of the Bobcats, was condemned due to damage to the roof from the weight of recent record snowfalls.  5th and 6th students and their teachers have a place to meet for class, but they have no materials, no paper, no pencils, nothing.  Everything they need to teach and learn is inside the condemned building.

Won’t you help?  University Life at the Prince William Campus is collecting urgently needed supplies.  Two drop-off locations have been identified at the Fairfax Campus, the LEAD office in Sub 1 and the Women and Gender Studies Center in the Johnson Center.

Mason has a special relationship with Mayfield.  The Principal and some teachers are Mason alums.  University Life at Prince William mentors Mayfield Student Government Leaders, helps students build their float for the Annual Manassas Christmas Parade, and brings Mayfield students to campus to learn about college life.  This school needs our help.

Requested School Supplies:

* Packets of wide ruled notebook paper

* Safety Scissors

* Blue, Black or Red Pens

* # 2 Pencils (no mechanical pencils please)

* Large Erasers

* Box of 12 Colored Pencils

* Pencil Box or Zippered Pouch

* Hand Sanitizer

* Box of hand/facial Tissues

Fairfax Campus Drop-Off Locations:

* Sub 1, Room 222 ~ LEAD Office

* Johnson Center, Room 240-K ~ Women and Gender Studies Center
